This school trip focused on experiential education offered students a unique chance to explore Longsheng’s breathtaking scenery and learn about its cultural significance.

Cultural Anthropology: A New Lens to See the World

Cultural anthropology, the study of human societies and cultures, compels us to look beyond the surface to grasp the essence of cultural expressions. A specialized branch, visual anthropology, emphasizes the use of imagery and film to document and convey observations of the world, communities, and societies.

Based on this concept, during this experiential learning opportunity we challenged the students with a unique task:

Create a Vlog using their phones to record and reflect on their learning, observations, and thoughts.

If someone were to ask, “What distinguishes tourism from experiential education?” the students’ vlogs would serve as the most compelling answer. Their inquiries delved into topics such as:

How does agriculture intertwine with the local economy, and shape local young people’s migration patterns?

• In what ways has modern technology transformed local people’s lives?
• What cultural imprints can be traced in the traditional clothing worn daily by ethnic groups?
• How do wooden stilt houses, passed down through generations, reflect architectural ingenuity?
• What similarities and differences exist between the Zhuang and Yao cultures that coexist in this region?

These might not seem like profound questions, yet they are deeply connected to everyday life. Through their exploration and conversations with locals, the students discovered stories of families separated by economic migration, the myths woven into Yao traditional dress patterns, and the novel ways live streaming has become a source of income.

Guided by a desire to uncover Longsheng’s cultural and social intricacies, the students approached the outdoor and experiential learning experience not as casual visitors but as keen learners.

Their observations revealed a place where tradition and modernity coexist and highlighted China’s rich cultural diversity.

Community Service: Connection Beyond Language

Equally moving were the bonds formed between the students and the local community, transcending linguistic barriers. Through heartfelt service and cultural exchange, these students—hailing from various countries and cultures—created genuine connections with the people of Longsheng.

Whether crafting benches and chairs for local households or working alongside artisans to build bamboo staircases for easier mobility, the students’ efforts were imbued with dedication.

Their joy in giving and receiving was palpable, as each contribution became a tangible bridge between cultures.

The diverse characters on those benches and chairs stood as living testaments to this meaningful exchange.

The evening cultural performances brought these connections to a vibrant crescendo. Students showcased their own traditions: an Indonesian poetry recital, a Ugandan dance, a comedic double-act, and a heartfelt rendition of a Cantonese song.

Beneath the same starlit sky, laughter and applause bridged cultural divides, proving that sincere emotion needs no translation.

This journey to Longsheng became more than an exploration of a place; it was a transformative process of listening, thinking, outdoor experiential learning, and understanding.

The students realized that culture is not static—it flows, evolves, and thrives in the interactions between people.

In every corner of the world lies a classroom, and true learning begins when we open our hearts to observe and listen.
